Pelton Community Primary School has a rich history of sporting success. We aim to provide as many opportunities as possible for children to be active and experience as many new sporting activities as possible during curriculum time and as part of after school clubs.
We regularly take part in a wide range of inter school sports competitions and festivals organised by the local Schools Sports Partnership and our local schools associations. These include: Football, Netball, Cross Country, Athletics, Dance and Tennis.
We also provide a number of after school clubs including: Athletics, Dance, Netball, Football, and SEN friendly sports such as Boccia and New Age Kurling.
Our School Sports Organising Crew and Physical Education Leader Mrs Tyrens regularly update our school sports Twitter page (@PeltonComSport) with exciting sports news including dates, competitions, events, results and celebrations. They regularly lead competitions and events for the children as well as assemblies in school.
Below is how we use the School Games Values here at Pelton in our School Sport and School Competitions.
TEAM WORK – everyone is treated equally, we support and respect our fellow class mates and team mates in order to have fun and achieve. We are positive role models.
HONESTY – We are honest with ourselves and with others. We compete in a fair and honest way.
RESPECT – We show respect at all times for each other, for ourselves, for opposition teams, for referees. We show sportsmanship, shake hands with our fellow opponents and support our team mates in a respectful manner.
DETERMINATION – Having the courage to follow our dreams. Having the mental strength, self discipline and determination to overcome obstacles, work towards our goals and work on been the best sportsperson we can be.
PASSION – Giving 100% effort. Competing with your heart and soul and never giving up in adverse times. Been passionate about the sport you play and willing to give 100% to achieve your goals.
SELF–BELIEF – Always believe you can achieve. Having the confidence and self-belief to succeed.

We are taking part in the Chester Le Street Junior Schools FA League again this year. A league we have proudly been a part for at least 20 years.
The boys and girls teams got off to a fantastic start. We have lots of children fulfilling new roles and some who are taking part in Inter School Competitions for the first time.
The children have played against a number of local schools facing a number of challenges along the way. The girls team has reformed after a two year break from competition and the new girls have shown determination and fantastic teamwork. The boys have welcomed new players and played with respect and perseverance.
The league runs with mathes played in Autumn, with a winter break and then play resumes in the Spring.

Sports Leaders Multi skills competition March 2020
Our fantastic Year 5/6 SSOC and House Captains delivered a multi skills competition to our Key Stage 2 classes. Children competed in events in order to earn points for their houses with a winner announce by the leaders in an our Special Mention Assembly.
Personal Best Challenges January 2020
Children in Key Stage 2 were competing against a familiar opponent – themselves!
Our Sports Crew and House Captains led the event in which children took part in a carousel of challenges. They completed an activity then had to try again to attempt to beat their own score. They showed great determination and readily encouraged each other with praise and support.
The children realised that there are lots of instances in school where we are encouraged to look at our work and improve it and understand they can use some of the skills they have practiced today in many other ways around school.
Year 4 Gymnastics festival November 2019
Mrs Tyrens’ class attended a gymnastics festival at Durham City gym and sampled a range of events including the vault, the bars, trampolining and tumbling on a sprung floor into foam cubes. They had an amazing time and particularly enjoyed the tumbling display from professional gymnasts.
Playground Leader Training September 2019
This September the School Sports Crew and House Captains received training from Marie Claire from the School Sports Partnership. They have learned how to encourage less active children to take aprt, how to encourage children to do their best and how to set up activities. They have lots of fantastic ideas and ways to keep children active on the playground and are looking forward to implementing them.

Year 6 Dodge ball Inter School Competition January 2019
Mrs Close and Mrs Rafferty’s children worked with a coach in December to refine their games skills, focused on the game of Dodgeball. They were then given the opportunity to take part in a competition against other schools in January. They had an amazing time finishing 4th in the competition.
Year 5 Multiskills Festival at Maiden Castle December 2018
Mrs Cowley’s class and Mrs Short’s Year 5 children took part in a festival ran by the SSP. They tried lots of events involving a range of fundamental movement skills such as running, jumping, throwing and balancing. They were also able to try some new sports – they particularly enjoyed fencing!
Year 4 Gymnastics Carousel December 2018
Miss Anderson’s class and Mrs Shorts Year 4 children went to a festival ran by the SSP. They were able to try out lots of activities based on the skills used in gymnastics. Two of our children were noticed by staff as being talented gymnasts and were given information of local clubs they might like to join! Well done year 4!
Football Intra School Competition November 2018
The key Stage 2 children took part in an intra school competition based around the skills used in football. Ran by our School Sports Crew and House Captains with Beth Wilson from the SSP, The all thoroughly enjoyed the activities giving lots of positive feedback.
The results were as follows:
1st 1617 points = Aidan
2nd 1501 points = Godric
3rd 1407 points = Bede
4th 1326 points = Cuthbert
Football League 2017-2018
The year 5/6 boys football team played exceptionally well in the tough games this season. They worked hard and qualified to be part of the ‘A’ League in Autumn to play against local school teams including: Lumley, Ouston, St. Margaret’s and Hetton Lyons. After lots of matches were rearranged due to the terrible weather, the boys played very well to become Runners up in the whole competition. Well done boys! They have earned some very smart plaques to take home and display in our Trophy cabinet.
They have then gone on the play in the C B Watson Cup in May 2018 and won the competition for the first time since 1997.
Year 5 and 6 Gifted & Talented 2018
Four Year 6 and four Year 5 pupils attended sessions in at The New College Durham and Gateshead Stadium called ‘Gifted and Talented’, a set of workshops to be held over the year for children noted to be outstanding in sport and fitness. During the first session they did fitness activities: fitness cardio, athletics circuits, fitness physiology and mental fitness. The children enjoyed their activities and are looking forward to their next visits.
Year 6 Netball 2017-2018
The year 6 girls netball team played in the Chester-Le-Street league and overall they came 4th . They had some tough matches but they fought through it. The girls played extremely well but unfortunately didn’t come out on top. Brilliant effort girls!
Multisport Festival at Maiden Castle – Wednesday 21st March 2018
Willow class had a great time at the Multisports Festival at Maiden Castle. Organised by the School Sports Partnership, they tried out a range of athletics activities as well as football skill-based games. Despite the cold they learned new skills and had lots of fun!
