Spring
Year 5 have had another busy term, here’s our Topic web of all the fantastic things we’ve been up to!
Spring 2
Literacy
Our novel for this half term was Journey to Jo’burg, we have enjoyed the story of Naledi and Tiro and enjoyed researching and learning about the Soweto Protest in South Africa.
World Book Day!
We celebrated World book day by dressing up as our favourite book character, visiting our local library, where we listened to a story and choose out own book to take away.
Maths – Decimals, percentages and fractions.
We have been working hard learning our place value to 2 decimal place and learning how to convert between decimals, percentages and fractions.
DT – Cooking
In DT we made a healthy Chinses stir fry. During our DT topic – Cooking- we learnt how to prepare food, surfaces and equipment safely. We used cutting, chopping, slicing, grating and peeling skills to prepare our food. We discovered new ways for stirring to make sure the vegetables were cook thoroughly and the sauce was spread across the whole stir fry. Finally, we tasted our stir fry using our chopsticks!
History – Vikings
We continue our learning with Vikings, we used sources of evidence to investigate how how Vikings were successful in battels against the Anglo-Saxons, we event went out and tested the Viking’s fighting styles.
We used a range of different sources to answer the questions “How did Viking’s live when they came to Britain?” we presented our research on a double-page spread.
Art – Collage
We used pictures of our favourite things to create a collage.
We took inspiration form the artist Emma Murjay and created our own collage of the journey Naledi and Tiro took to get to Johannesburg.
STEM Week
We had a great time in our Clawbot workshop, where we competing in a whole school robotics competition!
As the theme of STEM week was Growth we compared different life cycles!
Spring 1
In literacy this half term we have been reading The Viking Boy, following Gunnar on his quest for vengeance, after the Wolfmen raided his family steading and murdered his father!
We were introduced to different characters and mythical creatures such as: Valkyries. We used this opportunity to write our own character descriptions, using descriptive techniques we discovered in Autumn term!
The author, Tony Bradman, has kept us on our seats by leaving each chapter on a cliff hanger. We developed our own writing skills and learnt how to create a suspense and tense atmosphere, using figurative language, short snappy sentences and appealing to senses.
Our History topic this term has been Vikings!
We have ordered timelines, wrote a newspaper article about the attack on Lindisfarne and researched long ships!
Maths
In Maths we have been tacking fractions! We have been using our times tables knowledge to find equivalent fractions. We have been learning, how to find the lowest common multiple when add and subtracting fractions with different dominators.
In Geography this half term our topic is ‘Where does our food come from?’
We have explored where the food comes from in our cupboards and located using a atlas.
We used secondary research to find our how and why food grow around the world.
PE Swimming and Hockey!
Our indoor PE this half term has been swimming, we have been learning front crawl, breast stroke and back stroke. Swimming underwater through hoops, retrieving weights and floating. We have also worked hard on how to breathe, so we don’t have to put our feet down.
Our outdoor PE has been Hockey, we have been practicing out, passing, dribbling and tackling skills, we also creating our own games using the hockey skills we have learnt!
We also took part in a house dodgeball competition!
Computing
In Computing we have been creating a racing car using our coding skills.
2021 – 2022
Autumn
Year 5 have had a busy term, here’s our Topic web of everything we’ve been up to…
Literacy
We have been reading the Explorer by Katherine Rundell in our Literacy lessons and think the book is just BRILLIANT! The story is about 4 children – Fred, Con, Lila and Max – who end up stranded in the Amazon rainforest. At first, the children are desperate to make it home, but then they fall in love with the magic of the jungle and have a whale of a time exploring. We have done some fabulous writing based on events in the story and used the book for our Guided Reading sessions. Have a read of our super work!
Maths
In Maths this half term our topic has been place value, up to 1 million and Addition and Subtraction. We have been focusing on solving calculation using column method.
Geography
In Geography this half term our topic is ‘Fantastic Forests’ We have been learning about different vegetation zones around the world and what types of forests are in them. We have located locate forests around us and have discovered why forests are extremely important to us. Here is some of our work.
We have really enjoyed researching about the Amazon Rainforest, have a read through some of our leaflets…
Science
In Science, we have been learning about different life cycles and discovered not all life cycles are the same! Here’s what we have discovered…
Art Lessons: Sketching
Black History Month
As part Black History Month, we have been researching the achievements of Black people in the past and present.
Harvest
To celebrate Harvest we collected food for the people’s kitchen and created acrostic poems to share the meaning of Harvest.
2020- 2021
Wow, what a busy first half term we have had in Year 5. We have been really enjoying our learning and are so excited to share with you a snapshot of what we have been up to.
Literacy
We have been reading ‘The Explorer’ by Katherine Rundell for our class text. We have been enjoying getting to know the characters and following their adventures in the rainforest after their plane has crashed. We have based lots of our Literacy work on the text and have produced some fantastic pieces of writing around the rainforest theme.

Arts Week
We have really enjoyed Arts Week this half term. We developed our watercolour skills, working on creating darker and lighter colours, experimenting with mixing and the amount of water we used. We then used our new skills to create portraits on some of our key workers. We are really proud of our final pieces.

Topic Web for Autumn 1:
Why should the rainforests be important to us all?
This is an overview of our learning across the curriculum for the first half term of the Autumn term. We have really enjoyed linking our learning about rainforests to other subjects, particularly to the story of the Explorer that we have been using in Literacy and Guided Reading sessions.
Topic:
For our first half term, we were learning all about rainforests. We absolutely loved this topic, particularly finding out about the wide variety of animals and plants that can be found in the different layers of the rainforest. Here are some pictures of our fantastic work.

Arts Week:
We absolutely loved Arts Week this year. We focused on Illustration and learned about different creative careers based in Illustration. We were lucky enough to have 3 real-life artists come to work with us – Lauren Young (a local illustrator), Fiona Carvell (a graphic designer and artist) and Monique Scott (a graphic designer and children’s book illustrator). Take a look at some of our fantastic final pieces, illustrating a scene from our own adventure stories that we wrote in Literacy.
Autumn 2
What is so special about the USA?
This is an overview of our learning across the curriculum for the second half term of the Autumn term. We have linked our topic to different subjects including Computing and Art. We have enjoyed researching different states within the USA and finding out about what makes each of them unique. Make sure that you check out pictures of the sculptures we have made of famous US landmarks in the ‘Our Learning’ section.
So far in our topic, we have been learning about where in the world the USA is located and its neighbouring countries and oceans. We have learned that there are 50 US states, which are a bit like mini countries because the USA is so big. There are also numerous climate zones in the USA: Mediterranean, Desert and Temperate. It is such an interesting country and we can’t wait to learn more!
Art:
We are basing our artwork this half term on our USA topic. We have been learning about different styles of sculpture and are planning our own mini sculptures from clay. We will post some photos once our masterpieces are complete!
Computing:
In our Computing lessons, we have been thinking about what it means to be a good digital citizen. We worked in pairs to come up with a ‘Class Pledge’ and voted on our favourite. Here are some examples of what we came up with:
